compare plasma vs LCD,Is plasma better than LCD?
Sep 26th, 2008, under home guide |compare plasma vs LCD,Is plasma better than LCD? I have a 40 inch plasma, but I’m seeing 1) prices on everything drop, and 2) the quality of LCD is increasing. Power consumption, the “side view” of LCD . . . how has this changed recently? Is plasma still considerably better than LCD
I have an LCD and love the quality but I don’t think that LCD’s have always been better. Even though LCDs have made significant gains. Sony XBR series LCDs vs. Pioneer Elite Kuro Plasmas. Both excellent sets.
It is a matter of preference in my book. Both have their upsides and downsides. But with tech moving at such a rapid pace, it hard to say which is better. Plasmas for the longest time were considered better in many respects. Black levels were way better than LCDs but nowadays, LCDs are increasingly getting better.
Plasmas used to have the worry of burn-in but they have implemented tech like orbital pixelation to keep this from becoming an issue on newer models of plasma.
I Like the fact that LCDs have less glare and do not run as hot as Plasmas. And that I don’t worry about the burn-in.
Prices are comparatively close to be competitive. But you do get what you pay for. (Beware of brands for LCD and Plasmas, that haven’t established a good
Plasma has always had the far better picture, it has better black levels than LCD (which is dark grey), Plasma suffers from no motion blur and has a vastly superior refresh rate than LCD, why do you think LCD came out with 120Hz technology to help with motion blur and it only does a subpar job compared to plasma. Plasma has far better picture quality and colors and while LCD darkens the image as you sit more off axis from center, plasma does not do this and has a far greater off axis viewing distance.
The only benefit LCD has, is that it is brighter and has no protective screen that captures light reflections. But if you can control light in the room, plasma is the far superior picture. By the way if the picture is too bright it will wash out the picture quality, so having a brighter picture is not a good thing anyway and leads to eye fatigue.
Also plasmas do not have a shorter life than LCD, in fact plasmas have a half life brightness of 60,000 or more, so if you watched TV for 5 hours a day it would take 24 years before the plasma reached it’s half life. I guarantee you will not be watching plasma or LCD TV’s in 24 years, we as technology progresses will be on to the next big thing by then.
I do agree that plasma does cost more to watch, but like most quality products, it takes more power to run them.
